Kitesurf Essaouira: The Ultimate Atlantic Wind & Ocean Handbook

By Karim Benali14 min read

En résumé

Essaouira is North Africa's wind capital: a 4 km sandy bay with side-onshore Alizé, 80–90%+ rideable days May–September (20–35 knots), and wave spots at Sidi Kaouki and Moulay. Mornings are light; peak wind builds after midday. IKO lessons from €55/2h; camps from €349 at Essaouira Surf Camp School.

Pillar guide: /kitesurf

Perched on Morocco's wild Atlantic coast, Essaouira (historically Mogador) is North Africa's capital of wind sports. Crowned the Wind City of Africa, this UNESCO port combines consistent trade winds, a 4 km crescent bay sheltered by offshore islands, and spots from flatwater chop to world-class wave-riding reefs.

Whether you are harnessing a power kite for the first time, locking upwind and transitions, or hunting Atlantic rollers, this handbook covers a full kitesurf Essaouira trip.

Book: kitesurf lessons from €55 · kitesurf camp from €349 · wind statistics.

The thermal engine: how the Alizé works

Essaouira's wind is powered by the Alizé — the northeasterly trade driven by Atlantic high pressure. As the Saharan interior heats by day, rising hot air draws cooler ocean air into the bay.

15:00–19:00Often **25–35+ knots** in peak summerSmaller kites, advanced riding

Peak wind season (May–September)

Statistically 80–90%+ rideable days. Expect 20–35 knots daily. Workhorse kites for a ~75 kg rider: 6–9 m². Water 18–21°C.

Shoulder months (April & October)

Moderate winds 15–22 knots plus autumn groundswell. Larger kites (10–12 m²), foil setups, and hybrid surf + kite weeks shine here.

Winter swell season (November–March)

Trades drop; heavy North Atlantic swell takes over. Classic kite is intermittent; wave-kiters with big sails can score Moulay or Sidi Kaouki.

Essaouira Main Bay (Plage Tagharte)

Level: all levels. Wind: side / side-onshore from the right (port tack). Bottom: pure sand.

The 4 km bay is protected by Mogador Island. North near the port: flat to choppy. South near Oued Ksob: fun small kickers. Side-onshore wind is a safety net — you drift back to the wide beach.

This is our daily teaching zone: IKO lessons with Duotone gear and radio coaching.

Sidi Kaouki

Level: intermediate to advanced. Wind: side / side-onshore. Bottom: fine sand with scattered rock ledges.

25 km south — stronger, un-sheltered Atlantic wind and larger swell. Fast rights and lefts across ~5 km of beach. Currents strengthen on big swell days.

Moulay Bouzerktoun

Level: advanced to expert. Wind: side-offshore to side-onshore (very strong in summer). Bottom: sharp limestone platform.

25 km north — legendary for wave-kiters and pro windsurfers. Hollow waves over a shallow shelf: launch ramps and barrels. Needs precise kite control over rock.

Cap Sim and downwind runs

Level: intermediate to advanced.

Launch south of Cap Sim's headland and ride ~12 km downwind along the dunes into Essaouira Bay — one of Morocco's classic coastal downwinders. Ask coaches via contact or reservation.

Quiver and gear guide

Rider / seasonRecommended kite sizes
~75 kg — peak summer (May–Sep)**6 / 8 / 10 m²** (workhorses **7 & 9**; add **5–6** for 30+ knots)
~75 kg — shoulder (Apr / Oct)**9 / 12 m²** + foil option
Wetsuit**3/2mm** or flexible **4/3mm** chest-zip

Board: a standard twintip handles bay chop. For Kaouki or Moulay waves, bring a directional (strapless or strapped).

Why a full suit even in summer: the Canary Current keeps water 18–21°C; wind-chill on 25+ knot days is real.

Rentals and lessons include modern Duotone kit — you do not need to fly with gear. Progression guide: IKO levels.
