Pillar guide: /surf
Essaouira, the City of Alizés, is a practical place to learn to surf or to add days on a wave. The bay is sandy, the Atlantic sends swell through most of the year, and the town stays walkable after the session. A first whitewater lesson and a stronger day at Sidi Kaouki or on an Imsouane trip are both bookable. The useful part is the format, what is included, and the time of day.
This is how booking works at Book Surf Camp Essaouira. For the longer spot guide, see Learn Surfing in Essaouira.
Why book a surf lesson in Essaouira
You can rent a board and paddle out alone. A coached session still changes the morning, for three reasons.
Tide and wind. The trade winds and the tide change the bay every day. Instructors look at the ocean in the morning and put the group on the cleanest, safest stretch for that level.
Safety. Certified coaches watch the currents, teach where to sit, and keep the group together. You need to be able to swim.
Faster progress. A coach sees a late pop-up or a poor foot placement in the first waves. Most first-timers stand up within one or two sessions on the sandy beach.
Lesson formats and prices
Prices below are the school’s rates, for a 2-hour session, with board and wetsuit included.
Group surf lessons
The usual choice. One instructor, a maximum of 6 students. Social, and the lowest price: €30 for 2 hours.
Semi-private lessons
One instructor for 2 people. A fit for a couple or two friends who want more talk-time in the water. €40 per person for 2 hours.
Private coaching
One-to-one. The pace, the feedback and the wave choice follow you. €50 for 2 hours.
Multi-day surf camps
Daily lessons, a place to stay, gear and meals. Formulas run about 3 to 7 days. All-inclusive surf camps start at €299.
What is included
A standard lesson does not ask you to bring a board.
The board. Beginners use a wide soft-top. Intermediates can move to a mini-mal or a shortboard when the coach says the soft-top is holding them back.
The wetsuit. The Atlantic stays about 16–22°C. A 3/2 mm suit is the usual one from April to November; winter sessions use a 4/3 mm. The school fits the suit on the beach.
The 2 hours. A short warm-up and safety talk on the sand, then coaching in the water. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Full rates are also on the surf lessons page.
Spots the school uses
The meeting point depends on the morning’s swell, not on a fixed postcard.
Essaouira main beach. Sandy, sheltered in part by the Island of Mogador, with small whitewater. This is the beginner lesson beach.
Sidi Kaouki. About 20 kilometers south. More power, rights and lefts, fewer people on the sand. Used when the group can handle a step up from the town beach.
Imsouane. A day trip for intermediate surfers, known for a long right. It is not the first-lesson spot. The school runs it when the level and the swell match.
How to book in 3 steps
- Dates and level. One introduction, several progression days, or a camp. Say if anyone has never surfed, and the ages of children (surf lessons from age 6).
- Send the request. Use the [reservation page](/reservation) or WhatsApp +212 7 17 54 17 01. In July, August and around Easter, message ahead for a morning slot, before the trade wind chops the surface.
- Arrive with little. Towel, swimwear, water-resistant sunscreen and water. The school brings the boards and the suits, and sends the beach pin by WhatsApp after confirmation. Confirmation is within 24 hours.
