Learn Surfing in Essaouira: The Ultimate Guide to Riding the Atlantic Waves in the City of Alizés
En résumé
Essaouira, the City of Alizés, has waves most of the year: a sandy beach for a first lesson, Diabat and Sidi Kaouki to progress, and Moulay Bouzerktoun for experienced surfers. Book Surf Camp Essaouira lessons start at €30/2h with gear included.
Pillar guide: /surf
Essaouira, known as the City of Alizés, draws travelers between Atlantic ramparts, a UNESCO medina of blue-and-white alleys, and a fishing port of blue wooden boats. Beyond the heritage, the art and the food, the city has become a watersports destination, with surfing at the center.
The coastline faces open Atlantic swell and the trade winds. Absolute beginners can catch their first whitewater, and more experienced surfers can find cleaner, less crowded waves. Picking the spot, reading the tide and the wind, then learning with a local instructor is what makes the session work. This guide is the practical version, from Book Surf Camp Essaouira.

Why Essaouira is a surf destination in Morocco
Morocco is a major North African surf coast. Taghazout, further south, draws the crowds. Essaouira has a different setup: a sheltered bay, a slower surf culture, and waves that suit a first lesson as well as a stronger swell day.
Exposure to North Atlantic swell
The coast picks up north-west and west swells from Atlantic depressions, so rideable waves show up through most of the year. Summer brings smaller whitewater. Autumn and winter bring more regular, more powerful swell.
Culture, nature and surf in one place
After a session you can walk the medina, eat grilled fish at the port, or stay on the sand while the trade winds move through. The UNESCO town and the ocean sit next to each other. That is what separates Essaouira from a resort built only around the waves.
The best surf spots in and around Essaouira
The region covers a first lesson and, on the right day, a reef for experienced surfers.
Essaouira main beach, for beginners
In front of the city, partly sheltered by the Island of Mogador, the main beach has a sandy bottom and often small, regular whitewater. It is the spot for beginner surf lessons: pop-up practice on a soft-top, with a coach in the water.
Diabat
A few kilometers south, Diabat is wilder. Dunes and argan trees run toward the ocean, and the waves are a little more consistent than on the town beach. The village stays a low-key coastal stop, not a hotel strip.
Sidi Kaouki, for every level
About twenty kilometers south, Sidi Kaouki takes the Atlantic swell on a long beach.
For intermediates and advanced surfers. Rights and lefts break over sand and reef, with real sections to ride.
For a quiet day. Little large-scale building: the spot suits a full session, then time on the sand away from the medina.
Moulay Bouzerktoun, for experienced surfers
Further north, Moulay Bouzerktoun is demanding. Strong wind makes it a windsurf and kitesurf spot. The reef break is for experienced surfers when the swell stands up. It is not a first-lesson beach.
Which surf lesson format fits your level
A first time on a board and a session spent on take-off and turns are not the same lesson. At Book Surf Camp Essaouira, a group lesson is €30 for 2 hours (maximum 6 students), semi-private is €40 and private is €50. Board and wetsuit are included.
Beginner initiation (1 to 2 sessions)
For curious travelers and complete beginners.
- Gear. A soft-top sized to you, a leash and a wetsuit.
- Ocean safety. Currents, right of way, and where the group stays.
- Take-off. Paddling and the pop-up on the sand, then first whitewater waves with a certified instructor.
Book this format on the surf lessons in Essaouira page.
Multi-day surf camp
Several days build the habits: reading the tide, choosing a wave, and repeating the pop-up. Sessions run on the Essaouira coast and, when the swell allows, toward Sidi Kaouki. Camps start at €299.
Why local coaching matters
The ocean changes within an hour. A local coach picks the beach for that morning and stays beside you in shallow water.
Salman and the team
Salman, an IKO Level 3 instructor on the team, and the ISA surf coaches at Book Surf Camp Essaouira know the bay. El Mehdi Foum-Errabah and Ouitman lead the surf lessons. Groups stay at 6 students or fewer. Children from age 6, teenagers and adult beginners follow the same order: a briefing, then assisted waves.
Safety before wave hunting
The instructor checks the level, looks for rip currents, and moves the group if the day’s swell is wrong for a first lesson. You need to be able to swim. Beginners stay in about 1 to 1.5 meters of water.
Gear and how to prepare a surf day in Essaouira
Wetsuit and board
The Moroccan Atlantic stays cool even in sunshine, about 16–22°C. A 3/2 mm wetsuit is the usual suit from April to November. In winter, a 4/3 mm is more comfortable. The school provides the suit in your size.
Beginners start on wide, stable soft-tops. More advanced surfers can rent a fiberglass board: mini-mal, shortboard or fish.
Prepare the day
- Time of day. The trade winds often put chop on the water in the afternoon. The cleanest sessions are early morning, or late in the day when the wind drops.
- Water and sun. Drink, and use water-resistant sunscreen. Reflection off the sand and the sea is strong.
- The beach. Leave nothing on the sand. Fishermen work this coast.
Conclusion
Learning to surf in Essaouira is the main beach, a more open session at Sidi Kaouki, then the medina. The City of Alizés is both the water and the town.
