Essaouira offers ideal beginner conditions: Atlantic waves on shallow sand, affordable lessons year-round, and a UNESCO medina steps from the beach. Though famous for kitesurfing ("Windy City of Africa"), surfing remains the best ocean activity for families and first-timers.
Where surfing happens
Lessons run on the main beach west of the medina (Tagharte / corniche area, ~2 km from Bab Sbaa) and at Sidi Kaouki (20 min south) when swell is better.

Choosing a surf school
Walk the medina and you'll see many activity desks — but booking direct with the school usually gives the best price and flexibility.
Look for: IKO certification, small groups (max 6), kids programme from age 6, WhatsApp rescheduling, and board rental after the lesson.
What you need
Provided: wetsuit, board, leash, safety briefing.
Bring: swimwear under the suit, towel, SPF50 sunscreen (zinc on bright days), water.
Showers on the beach are limited — plan dry clothes.
Water temperature & wetsuits
Atlantic Essaouira: ~16–17°C in March, peak ~20–22°C early September. Not warm — wetsuits almost always required.
