En résumé

Yes — an Imsouane day trip from Essaouira is worth it for intermediate surfers who can catch green waves and ride a 200–400 m point break. Guided trips from €70/day include transport and local spot briefing. Beginners should stay on Essaouira Bay.

Pillar guide: /surf

Imsouane holds a legendary status in global surf culture: home to one of the longest right-hand point breaks in Africa, with rides regularly exceeding 200–400 meters on good swells. From Essaouira, it is a 2.5-hour coastal drive south — and one of the most requested day trips we organize.

But is it worth it for *your* level? Here is our field guide.

Quick answer: should you go?

Your levelWorth the trip?
Complete beginnerNo — stay on Essaouira Bay

What makes Imsouane special?

Imsouane Bay features two main breaks:

Cathedral (La Cathedrale) The famous **long right point** — mellow, peeling walls that run down the headland. On a solid swell (1.5–2.5 m), rides can connect for hundreds of meters. Best for **intermediate to advanced** surfers comfortable in a lineup.

Bay Mimosa (La Bay) More forgiving **beach-break style** section inside the bay. Suitable for **confident beginners** on smaller days — but still more challenging than Essaouira's main beach.

Guided trip vs self-drive

We strongly recommend a guided trip for first visits. Our coaches know which section works for your level, when the tide fills in, and how to avoid the Cathedral crowd on peak days.
