أين تقع الصويرة؟

Essaouira (formerly Mogador) sits on Morocco's central Atlantic coast in the Marrakech-Safi region. The city is 170 km west of Marrakech, 470 km southwest of Casablanca, and 190 km north of Agadir.

The UNESCO-listed medina is surrounded by 18th-century ramparts overlooking the Atlantic. Mogador Island shelters the main bay, creating safer teaching conditions than exposed reef breaks elsewhere on the coast.

ركوب الأمواج في الصويرة

Essaouira receives consistent Atlantic swell year-round. The primary teaching beach is a sandy beach-break in the protected bay — ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Water temperature ranges from 17°C (January) to 22°C (August).

Peak surf season runs September to April when North Atlantic swells produce 1–2 metre waves. Summer (June–September) offers smaller, gentler waves suited to first-time surfers. Morning sessions are recommended in summer before trade winds strengthen in the afternoon.

Key surf spots near Essaouira include: Essaouira Bay (beginners), Sidi Kaouki (25 min south — longer rides), Imsouane (90 min north — Africa's longest right-hand point break in winter), and Moulay Bouzerktoun (advanced reef).

كايت سيرف في الصويرة

Essaouira is nicknamed the "Windy City of Morocco" (Cité du Vent). The city receives NNE trade winds (Alizé) on more than 300 days per year, with average speeds of 15–30 knots during peak season (April–October).

Wind direction is predominantly side-onshore at the main beach — the safest configuration for learning and riding. Sidi Kaouki lagoon offers flat-water progression zones. Essaouira ranks among the world's top 10 kitesurf destinations alongside Tarifa, Dakhla, and Cape Town.

IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) certification is the global standard for kitesurf instruction. Essaouira Surf Camp School offers IKO Level 1 (6 hours typical), Level 2, and Level 3 courses with Duotone and Slingshot equipment.

وينغ فويل في الصويرة

Wingfoil combines an inflatable hand-held wing with a hydrofoil board. It requires less wind than kitesurfing (from 12 knots) and is considered easier to learn due to the absence of kite lines.

Essaouira's protected bay provides flat water for first flights, while open ocean sections offer wave-riding opportunities for advanced riders. BPJEPS-certified coaches at Essaouira Surf Camp School use radio helmet coaching for real-time feedback.

Most beginners achieve basic foil riding within 6–9 hours. An intensive 4-day course (8–12 hours) in Essaouira's consistent wind typically leads to independent upwind riding on flat water.

كيفية الوصول إلى الصويرة

Most international visitors fly to Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) and transfer by CTM bus (€8–10, 2.5–3 hours) or private taxi (€80–120). Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) has seasonal Ryanair and Transavia flights from Europe.

EU, UK, US, and Canadian citizens do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD); euros are widely accepted. ATMs are available in the medina.

Essaouira Surf Camp School offers airport transfers from Marrakech, Agadir, and Essaouira airports. The meeting point for lessons is Essaouira beach (~12 minutes walk from the medina) or Sidi Kaouki depending on conditions.

معايير السلامة

Essaouira's teaching beaches have sandy bottoms without reef hazards — among the safest learn-to-surf locations in Morocco. Kitesurf zones are side-onshore with boat assist available for advanced downwinders.

Mandatory safety briefings precede every session. Surf insurance is included in all packages. A 24/7 emergency WhatsApp line (+212 7 17 54 17 01) is available for all guests.

No shark incidents have been recorded at Essaouira teaching beaches. Currents are generally mild within the bay; instructors select spots daily based on swell, tide, and wind forecasts.
