Understanding Essaouira: surf vs wind dynamics

Essaouira's geography creates two distinct ocean seasons, driven by North Atlantic groundswells and northeasterly trade winds (the Alizé).

The surf season (October to April)

Winter brings powerful North Atlantic groundswells. Summer trade winds drop, giving glassy mornings, longer-period waves and cleaner lines. Air sits around 18–23°C; water usually needs a 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit.

The kite & wind season (May to September)

The Alizé (northeasterly trade wind) blows 20–35+ knots almost daily. Traditional surf is often blown out after 10:00 AM, while kitesurf and wingfoil become world-class.

Shoulder months (April & October)

These windows offer golden-hour days: clean surf in the morning, kite or wing in the afternoon. Ideal if you want both sports on one trip — see surf or kitesurf first.

Essaouira Main Bay (La Baie / Plage Tagharte)

Skill: beginner to low-intermediate. Bottom: pure sand. Best tide: low to mid. Ideal swell: west / northwest, 2–6 ft.

Protected somewhat by Mogador Island, the main city beach offers soft, rolling waves. The shallow sandy bottom is one of the safest places in North Africa to take a first lesson — stand-up is easy on the inside section.

Sidi Kaouki

Skill: all levels (peak and swell dependent). Bottom: sand beach breaks with scattered reef. Best tide: mid. Ideal swell: northwest, 3–8 ft.

A bohemian village 25 km south of Essaouira, with about 5 km of beach and multiple peaks.

The Main Beach: fun, punchy peaks in front of the village.

Marabout / The Shrine: an A-frame over sand-covered reef in front of the white Sufi tomb.

La Grotte & La Bouteille: just north of Kaouki — faster, hollower walls over rock and reef for experienced surfers.

Cap Sim (Grotte & Point)

Skill: intermediate to advanced. Bottom: rock, reef and sand. Best tide: low to mid. Ideal swell: large west/northwest, 6 ft+.

Tucked behind massive dunes, Cap Sim needs a 4x4 or a dune walk. On a large winter swell the point produces long peeling right-handers that wrap down the beach — rides comparable to Morocco's southern points.

Moulay Bouzerktoun

Skill: advanced / expert. Bottom: sharp reef and flat rock. Best tide: high (low tide exposes hazardous rocks). Ideal: west swell with wind for kite; low wind for surf.

25 km north of Essaouira, Moulay is legendary in the windsurf and kitesurf communities. Traditional surfers hunt early winter mornings before the wind: fast, hollow right-handers over a shallow reef. Not a beginner spot.

Tafedna

Skill: intermediate. Bottom: sand and cobble. Season: November–March. Crowd: empty.

A sheltered swell magnet about 60 km south. Worth a dedicated day when Essaouira Bay is small or crowded. We run it as a guided surf trip.

How to get to Essaouira

Via Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU)

15 km south of town. Direct flights from hubs such as London Stansted, Paris and Brussels. A grand taxi to the center is around 150 MAD (€15).

Via Marrakech Menara (RAK)

Marrakech sits about 180 km inland.

Coach (Supratours or CTM): most reliable budget option. Air-conditioned coaches run several times daily from the Marrakech train station area to Essaouira's medina gate. About 3 hours, 100–120 MAD (€10–€12).

Private transfer / taxi: 700–1000 MAD (€70–€100), about 2.5 hours. We can arrange airport pickup with reservation or contact.

Via Agadir Al Massira (AGA)

About 175 km south. CTM or Soukri buses run north on the N1 coastal road (~3.5 hours).

Non-surfing activities and culture

When the swell drops or your arms need a break, Essaouira is more than a surf town.

Explore the UNESCO medina

Unlike Marrakech's maze, Essaouira's old town was redesigned in the 18th century by a French architect under Sultan Mohammed III. The result is a laid-back grid inside ocean ramparts (Skala de la Ville). Walk the walls where Portuguese cannons still face the sea, and visit workshops carving Thuya, a fragrant local hardwood.

Fresh seafood at the port

Go to the blue fishing harbour in the morning. Choose sardines, sea bass, calamari or lobster off the boats and have them charcoal-grilled at the open-air stalls near the port square.

Gnawa music

Essaouira is a spiritual home of Gnawa — African Islamic spiritual songs and rhythms. The Gnawa World Music Festival lands every June; year-round you can hear the gimbri and qraqeb in medina cafes.

Quad bikes and horseback in the dunes

Dunes stretch south toward Diabat and Cap Sim. Quad the coastal dunes or ride horseback along the shoreline at sunset.

Currency and money

The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is the local currency (about 1 EUR ≈ 11 MAD). Upscale hotels and surf schools take cards; cash is needed for petit taxis, souks, small restaurants and some rentals. ATMs around Place Moulay Hassan and the beach boulevard.

Local transport

Petit taxis (small blue cars): flat-ish rates in town, often 8–10 MAD per ride inside city limits.

Sidi Kaouki: grand taxi from the main station (~15 MAD shared seat, or ~150 MAD private) or local bus #2. Easier: join a guided surf trip.

Surf gear and wetsuits

Promenade rentals and Kaouki square typically charge 150–250 MAD (€15–€25) per day for board + wetsuit. Lessons with Essaouira Surf Camp School include board, wetsuit and leash — group surf from €30/2h. Standalone rental from about €15/day.

Language

French and Moroccan Arabic (Darija) are universal in tourism. English is widely understood in surf schools, hostels and modern restaurants. We also coach in Spanish, German and Arabic.

Is Essaouira better than Taghazout for a first Morocco surf trip?

Can I surf and kitesurf on the same trip?

Yes — especially in April, May and October. Surf early, kite when the Alizé builds. Kitesurf camp and surf camp can be combined via packages.

How many days do I need in Essaouira?
